Hi everyone, this is my last blog post! (probably ever, I don’t know when I would ever write another blog post.) I picked out some countries and cultures to look into and see what their music sounds like. I really enjoyed this and love hearing new things. I hope you all enjoy listening to these music selections!
The first culture I picked to look into was Russia! Yes, this is very broad and I needed to narrow down my search a bit so I picked out some Russian folk music for you to listen to. I picked Russian Folk because I always wonder about Russia. It's a very big country and we did not really get around to it in class, so, It’s my first pick!
The most traditional russian folk music I could find normally consists of stringed instruments. I did some research into these and most of them had either 3 or 7 strings which I thought was very interesting! So, here is Russian Folk:
The next culture I picked out was India. I know we covered this one in class {I was allowed one :) } I had to write about India because it’s a music and culture I personally really enjoy and have interest in. I grew up watching bollywood movies, learning the dances, and singing the songs! So I know many modern Indian songs and still listen to them all frequently. Something I find really interesting about bollywood music is how the musicians and producers mix traditional sounds with modern technological sounds and other more westernized instruments! This is my favorite kind of music to listen to, when you get something big from two very different cultures and blend them together. Bollywood does this especially well.
Let me introduce my first and last celebritry crush! 13 year old Ashley was obsessed.
I could not pick just one favorite so I picked two.... please enjoy the fake tap dancing.
The next country I picked was Fiji. My brother spent time traveling and he spent several months in Fiji and he shipped us all gifts from overseas, wrapped in banana tree leafs, which were moldy by the time they got to us. Though the leaves were moldy it’s a fond memory I have. So I picked a song that is meant to be “Traditional Music” from Fiji. I am not sure how traditional it is based on the instrumentation, if I had to guess it would probably be the more traditional folk slightly modernized side of things. Either way it’s still fun!
Lastly I picked something modern from Denmark pretty much just because I was out of ideas. On the map it kinda had its own thing going on so I decided I would see what traditional music is like there! I found the music really interesting to listen to. The different timbres of “squeaky” noises was really interesting to me and I definitely heard some influence from other cultures too. The music definitely sounds a little middle eastern to me.
So that is my small trip around the world. I hope you all found these as interesting as I did, especially the bollywood music, that stuff really takes me back! I had fun writing a blog and getting to hear all the things that were new to me!
Ashley i loved your picks!!! Thanks for more fantastic Bollywood- I was hoping to get more song recommendations. I also found the Fiji one to be very niceeee and happy vibes
Hi Ashley! It was really fun reading your blog and listening to all of the new music. I think out of all of the music you included on this playlist my favorite just had to be the song from Denmark. I know that it doesn’t have as much going on in it but I really like the sea shanty vibe that it gives off. It in a way reminds me of the opening song that is chanted at the beginning of the frozen movie. (not the same thing I know, but still) :)
Hii, I really enjoyed your choices in countries. Obviously I'm bias but I also love me a good bollywood film + their music, so that was def my fav. For Russia, I found the music to be very whimsy. As for Fiji, what a nice connection to your personal life and unique choice!.
Hi Ashley!! I really liked reading through your blog, and listening to the music you picked! I had never heard music from Fiji, so I thought it was cool to hear.
Hey Ashley! I liked the Russian music that you picked, and the Indian music was really cool to listen to. I also didnt know your brother went to Fiji , pretty cool!
I love this, Ashley! I have never heard Fiji music before, and definitely something I will go back and listen to. Also, the men singing in Bonden og Kragen reminded me of the seven white dwarfs in Snow White singing Heigh-Ho lol.
Hi Everyone, I'm Ashley Patterson, and I am a music student at Converse! I have always loved music. When I was a young girl, I used to dance around my house with a Walkman and my favorite Oak Ridge Boys cassette tape! I started taking piano lessons on and off through middle school, and it wasn't until my first semester of college that I decided I wanted to pursue a music career. I had my first technical piano lesson halfway through my freshman year, and now here we are! Along with a love for classical piano music and all things pop, funk, and rock and roll, I also play guitar and sing my own songs. I have lived in Spartanburg my whole life, and as much as I love this town, I look forward to eventually living somewhere else one day. I love to travel and see new places. You can always count on me to be your "yes" woman! An example of something that I am super into right now: A song I have been absolutely loving right now is Latum Alterum (Ya Ya Ya) by the Steam Powered ...
MUSIC AND MEMORY My first example for music and memory is from the artist Iron and Wine. The artist's name is Sam Beam, but his music is all posted under Iron and Wine! I love almost all of his music! He plays indie folk music and some long songs that lean more digital, and some songs that lean way into acoustic instrumentation. Most of his music mainly reminds me of summertime. The music just has a very warm feeling to it because of the mostly acoustic instruments and thick harmonies. Sam has one particular album that explicitly reminds me of fall time. The only way to explain it is if you wrapped falltime up in an album! This is one of Sam's brand new songs from an otherwise unreleased album! But the vibe is still standing strong! P.S. there is an official music video for this song, but I found it distracting from the very beautiful very poetic lyrics. The next song that really takes me back is Danke Schoen by Wayne Newton. This song really reminds me so much of Christmas ti...
Good job on this , Ashley. Love how many people I’m running into had Russia.. learned some more things. Fiji was eye catching.
